Dons Even Series With 6-3 Win Over Toreros

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco used a five-run bottom of the eighth inning to rally back and claim a 6-3 win over the eighth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Benedetti Diamond.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 39-14 overall, 16-4 in the WCC and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Dons improve to 30-22 overall, 11-9 in the WCC and even the series with the Toreros.

The Dons got on the scoreboards first as in the bottom of the third inning, USF pushed across one run on two hits. The Dons' run came on a Ryan Lipkin RBI single to center field to give USF a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros then evened the score in the top of the sixth inning, scoring one run on two hits. James Meador got things started with a single up the middle. After Meador stole second, Kevin Hansen drove in Meador with a single to left field, moving the score to 1-1.

San Diego then took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Kevin Muno got things started as he singled to the pitcher. Muno then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. Sean Nicol drove in Muno as he hit the ball to the third baseman, who committed a error allowing Muno to come across the plate and Nicol to safety reach first to give USD a 2-1 lead.

USF then rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 6-2 lead. The USF runs came on a Chris Escobar two-run double and a Stephen Yarrow three-run homer.

USD was able to push across one more run in the top of the ninth inning on a Muno RBI single, but it wasn't enough as the Dons evened the series with a 6-3 win.

Offensively for the Toreros, Muno led the way as he went 3-for-5 with one RBI and three stolen bases. Both Meador and Hansen went 2-for-4 at the plate with Hansen recording an RBI.

Ricardo Pecina (5-4) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on three hits in 1.0 innings f work. USD's starter Josh Romanski dominated the Dons on the mound as he allowed one runs on five hits, while striking out seven in 7.0 innings of work. USF's Mitchell Bialosky was credited with the win as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the three-game series with e Dons in a 1 p.m. WCC game.
