Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The eighth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team was stunned by the University of San Francisco, 14-3, Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference Game at Benedetti Diamond.

With the loss, the Toreros conclude the regular-season with a 39-15 overall record, fall to 16-6 in the WCC and drop the three-game series to the Dons. With the win, USF improve to 31-22 overall and 12-9 in the WCC.

The Toreros bean the game in stylish fashion as sophomore outfielder Kevin Muno launched his second home run of the series to centerfield to lead off the game and give USD a 1-0 lead.

The Dons then answered back in the bottom of the first inning scoring one run on a Joey Riley solo home run to lead off the frame for the Dons to tie things up at 1-1.

The Dons then exploded to score seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The USF runs came on a USD fielding error, a USD throwing error, a two-run Riley single and a Kyle Morgan two-run single.

In the top of the third inning, the Toreros took back one run on two hits. Sean Nicol got things started with a walk, then moved to second on a James Meador single to left field. Kevin Hansen then drove in Nicol with a run-scoring double to left field to cut the deficit to six at 8-2.

The Dons then went on to score three runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the sixth inning, one in the eighth inning to cap their scoring for the day and put the game out of reach.

USD managed to push across one run in the top of the ninth on a Michael Lugo RBI single up the middle to put the game at its final of 14-3.

Offensively for the Toreros, Muno led the way as he went 2-for-5 with one home run and one RBI. Meador was the only other Torero to record multiple hits on the afternoon as he went 2-for-4 with one double.

Kyle Blair (6-4) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros on the mound, as he allowed four runs on three hits in 1.0 innings of work. Matt Lujan (7-2) was credited with the win on the mound for the Dons as he allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out seven in 7.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will take next week off to focus on finals before hosting the WCC Championship series at Cunningham Stadium on May 23-25 for the right to earn the WCC's automatic bid into the NCA Regionals. Game times have yet to be determined for the series.
