SEATTLE, Wash. - Paced by Torey Ellick's match-best 13 kills, the 17th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team (10-2) picked up a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15) win over Seattle University in its final West Coast Conference tune-up Saturday afternoon.
Ellick recoded her 13 kills on 18 attempts, while only committing one attack error to post a .667 attack percentage. Amy Mahinalani DeGroot was the second Torero to record double-digit kills as she had 11 on 21 attempts to post a .333 attack percentage. DeGroot also recorded a match-best 13 digs to post a double-double. Kelsi Myers led the team with 28 assists in helping lead USD to a .337 team attack percentage.
In the first set, the Redhawks kept things close, then with the score at 12-11 in favor of Seattle, an Ashton Basch kill off a set from Myers ignited a 8-3 San Diego run that was capped on a Seattle attack error to give the Toreros all the momentum and a comfortable 19-15 lead. The Toreros then outscored the Redhawks 6-2 down the stretch to claim set one, 25-17.
In the second set, the Redhawks again kept things close, then with the score knotted at 14-14, an Ali Troost kill off a set from Myers sparked a 9-3 San Diego run that was capped off on a DeGroot kill off a set from Myers to give USD complete control with a 23-17 lead. San Diego never looked back as they cruised on to claim a 25-19 win.
In the third and final set, The Toreros jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and never let the Redhawks get any kid of momentum. San Diego would ease their way to a 25-15 win and complete the three-set sweep over Seattle.
The Toreros will now take a week off before returning to action on Oct. 2 as they open WCC action against Gonzaga University inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 7 p.m.
