SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's swimming and diving team had a 144-137 lead going into the final event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay, when the UC San Diego Tritons swam to a first and second place finish to steal the win from the Toreros, 152-146.
The Toreros had 10 first place finishes in the meet and six second place finishes overall.
Freshmen Jessica Rodriguez and Sarah Geerdes led the team, both with two first place finishes and a third place finish. Rodriguez captured the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.49) and the 100 yard butterfly (58.98), and placed third in the 200 yard individual medley (2:12.98). Rodriguez was the third leg of the second place 200 yard medley relay team that took second place (1:49.25). Geerdes took top spot in the 200 yard breastroke (2:24.04) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:07.66), and placed third in the 100 breastroke (1:08.62). Geerdes was also the second leg of the second place 200 yard medley relay team that took second place (1:49.25).
Diver Amy Bogart captured first place in the 1-meter event with a total score of 2:15.40 and took second place in the 3-meter event with 2:17.27. Teammate Monica Oddo took first place in the 3-meter event scoring 232.57 and finished third in the 1-meter event with a 2:08.80. Adelaide Bednarski had a third place finish in the 3-meter event scoring 209.47.
In the distance events Sarah Gleason finished in first place in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.04 and a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:08.24. Teammate Samantha Jafari came in second place in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:45.50.
Rounding out the top finishers on the day was Kristen Yoon with a first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke (58.88) and a second place finish in the 200 yard backstroke (2:06.93). Erin Voyles captured first place in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.15) and second place in the 100 yard freestyle (53.88). Tina Levesque finished first in the 50 yard freestyle (24.97).
The Toreros take a week to prepare for their next meet slated for Saturday, January 24 in Flagstaff, Arizona as they take on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University in Wall Aquatic Center at 11:00 a.m.
