SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Addie Cartan's goal in the 86th minute of action lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 win over the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match.
With the match knotted at 2-2 and time running out, Christine Mock sent a touch pass into a crowded goal box, where Cartan then scored her first goal of the season, and lifted the Toreros to a 3-2 victory.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as in the 36th minute of action, Natalie Vinti tallied her third goal of the season. Off a corner kick, the ball found the feet of Vinti, who then redirect the ball into the far right side of the goal to give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Francisco then evened the score just before the end of the first half, as at the 42:31 mark, Ashlyn Mazur headed the ball off a corner kick into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Dons then took the lead early in the second half, as at the 50:17 mark, Alyson Drake corralled a pass from Megan Connor and put it into the back of the net to give USF a 2-1 lead.
The Toreros evened the score in the 61st minute of action, as Vinti took a free kick after the Dons committed a foul, and Mock was there to head the ball into the back of the net to knot the score at 2-2.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-5-2 overall and move to 2-1-0 in the WCC. With the loss, the Dons fall to 6-3-5 overall and move to 1-2-0 in the WCC.
USD out shot the Dons 10-6 and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host Loyola Marymount University in a 7 p.m. WCC match at Torero Stadium.
