MALIBU, Calif. - The 20th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 West Coast Conference decision to Pepperdine University Saturday afternoon.
With the 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 loss, the Toreros saw their eight-match winning streak come to an end as they fall to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the WCC. With the win, the Waves improve to 8-6 overall and move to 1-1 in the WCC.
Torey Ellick and Carrie Baird led the team with 10 kills apiece, with Ellick hitting at a .500 clip and Baird hitting at a .400 clip. Kayleen Webster led the team's defense with 10 digs and Kelsi Myers recorded a team-best 45 assists in helping direct the USD offense to a .316 attack percentage.
In the first set, it was a sea saw battle for the first part of the match until the score was knotted at 5-5, then the Waves used a 9-1 run to gain all the momentum and take a commanding 14-6 lead. The Waves never looked back as they took set one 25-18.
In the second set, it was a close nit battle throughout the entire set, as both teams had their turn with the lead and neither team had a lead bigger than three. Late in the set, with the score knotted at 19-19, a Sarah Schatzman kill gave the Toreros the lead, but that is the last time USD would lead the frame as the Waves would outscore the Toreros 6-4 down the stretch to claim the set.
In the third and final set, it looked to be similar to the second set as both teams took their turn with the lead early and kept things close. Then with the score knotted at 8-8, a Schatzman kill ignited a 5-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Pepperdine attack error to give USD a 14-10 lead. Pepperdine then went on a 6-2 run of their own to tie things up at 16. The Waves then went on a 5-2 run to take a 21-18 lead and never looked back as they claimed the win 25-23.
USD will return to action on Thursday when they host the University of San Francisco to the Jenny Craig Pavilion for a 7 p.m. WCC match.
