PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team stunned No. 18 University of Portland with a 2-1 West Coast Conference win Friday evening. Marcelo Carminatti and Stephen Posa scored for the Toreros.
With the win, San Diego improves to 6-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in WCC play. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 6-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
In the first half, San Diego struck first in the 26th minute on a goal by Posa. Freshman forward Patrick Wallen sent a ball forward down the right side to Posa, who then fired off a rocket shot from 25 yards out that Portland goalkeeper Austin Guerrero got a hand on but wasn't able to put a stop to the shot which ended up in the corner of the goal, giving the Toreros the 1-0 advantage.
A USD defender stopped a Portland shot with his hand from inside the penalty box prompting a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Collen Warner took the penalty kick for the Pilots tying the match at 1-1.
Then despite losing a player due to a red card ejection, San Diego managed to take the lead in the 69th minute with a goal from junior forward Carminatti. Portland had the ball down in San Diego's territory. The Toreros cleared the ball and played it quickly through the midfield with help from Wallen up to Marcello who received the ball with his back to the goal 25 yards away. Marcello turned quickly and blasted a shot into the upper 90 on the left side of the goal lifting USD to a 2-1 victory.
Portland had 19 shots and six on goal while USD recorded 12 shots and four on goal. Portland tallied seven corner kicks to San Diego's zero. San Diego keeper Kelin Briones had five saves allowing only one goal while Guerrero allowed two goals and recorded two saves for the Pilots.
San Diego travels to Spokane, Wash. to take on the Gonzaga University Bulldogs to wrap up their Pacific Northwest road trip. The Bulldogs broke their three-match losing streak this evening against the Loyola Marymount University Lions with a 2-1 overtime victory. The Toreros and Bulldogs kickoff at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11.
