SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Both Ali Troost and Carrie Baird recorded double-digit kills to help propel the University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 West Coast Conference win over visiting Gonzaga University Saturday afternoon at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-20, 25-29, 25-11 win, the Toreros end the regular-season with a 18-7 overall record and finish in second place in the WCC with a 10-5 mark. San Diego will now await the NCAA Tournament selection show announcement next Sunday at noon to learn if they have earned an at large bid into the field of 64 for the ninth consecutive season. With the loss, the Zags finish the season with a 10-18 overall record and a 5-10 record in the WCC.
Troost recorded her match-best 14 kills on 28 swings, while committing four attack errors to post a .357 attack percentage, and she recorded 11 digs to post a double-double. Baird recorded her 11 kills on 30 swings to post a .233 attack percentage. Senior Kayleen Webster recorded a match-best 14 digs to lead the USD defense, while Kelsi Myers racked up32 assists in helping lead the USD offense to a .233 attack percentage.
In the first set, with the score knotted at 4-4, three consecutive service aces by Troost ignited a 5-1 run that was capped on a Gonzaga attack error to give San Diego a 9-5 lead. The Zags pulled back to within two at 10-8 on a Michelle Boevers kill, but the Toreros responded with a 7-0 run that began on a Troost kill off a set from Myers and was bookended on a GU attack error. The Toreros never looked back as they eased their way to a 25-20 win.
In the second set, Gonzaga again held things close early, but with the score at 8-7 in favor of the Toreros, a Baird Kill then sparked a 5-2 San Diego run that gave USD some breathing room and a 12-8 advantage. The Zags then kept the Toreros close not trailing by more than three for a majority of the set, and finally with USD leading 20-18, a GU attack error then sparked a 5-1 Torero run to close out the set and give the Toreros a two sets to none advantage heading into the break.
In the third and final set, The Toreros came out firing on all cylinders, as they opened the set with a 10-0 run, as they took advantage of several Gonzaga miscues and posted their best hitting percentage of the match at .278. Gonzaga could not recover from the deficit, as the Toreros cruise their way to a 25-11 win to complete the sweep.
