SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team finished day one of the USD Invitational Tournament with a loss against the Rams of Colorado State and a win against the Broncos of Boise State.
In game one, the Toreros and the Rams faced off against one another in the 4:30 game. Both teams started off with solid performances in the opening innings. Colorado State was first to score in the third inning when with two runners on, the Rams hit a single pushing across one run. Colorado State scored another run in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth inning for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, USD's Keely Helbock singled. Jennifer Ellenbeck reached on a fielder's choice advancing to second base and moving Helbock to third base. Cathy Wineinger was out on a fielder's choice scoring Helbock from third base and moving Ellenbeck up one base. Danielle Duhart grounded out scoring Ellenbeck cutting the Ram's lead 4-2 before the inning ended.
San Diego was unable to take the lead as Colorado went on to win 4-2.
In the night cap, USD fell behind early 4-0 to the Boise State Broncos. BSU scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning.
San Diego responded in the bottom of the third inning with three runs. With runners on first and second base, Celeste Soto singled and advanced to second base moving both runners ahead one base and cutting the Bronco lead 3-1. Taylor Hensley was hit by a pitch putting two runners on base. Keely Helbock then singled and took an extra base allowing Hensley and Soto to both score bringing USD to within one run as the inning ended 3-4. San Diego tied up the game in the fourth inning on a single by Lindsey Fleet. The Toreros pushed across the winning run in the sixth inning when Cathy Wineinger doubled and advanced on the throw to third scoring Alyssa Schott who took base on balls to start the inning.
San Diego improves to 1-5 overall looking to extend their win streak on day two of the USD Invitational as they open the day at 10:00 a.m. against Long Beach State followed by a noon game against Colorado State at the USD Softball Complex.
