SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of Oklahoma (5-0) scored 11 unanswered runs to come from behind and defeat the 11th-ranked University of San Diego (2-2) baseball team Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring as in the first inning, they scored one run on two hits. Kevin Muno led off the inning with a single to centerfield, then moved to second on a throwing error by the OU shortstop. After Muno advanced to third on a James Meador groundout to second base, Victor Sanchez drove in Muno with a sacrifice fly to left field to give USD a early 1-0 lead.
The Toreros then doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sean Nicol led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to second on an Austin Green single to left field. Steven Chatwood then grounded into a double play, which scored Nicol from third to give USD a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Oklahoma scored seven runs on seven hits to take control of the game. The OU runs came on a Jamie Johnson grand slam homer run, a JT Wise RBI single, a Ross Hubbard RBI single and when Bryant Hernandez reached on a fielders choice to give OU a 7-2 lead.
The Sooners then added a pair of runs in each of the sixth and ninth innings to put the game at its final of 11-2.
Chatwood led the USD offense as he went 3-for-4 with one double. Nicol was the second Torero with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 with one double.
Darrin Campbell (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. JR Robinson (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound for the Sooners, as he allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Sooners will return to action on Wednesday as they conclude the two-game tilt at 2 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
