SAN DIEGO, Calif - The University of San Diego softball team celebrated Military Appreciation day at the USD Softball Complex with a joint USD-SDSU color guard, a live anthem singer and an honorary first pitch ceremony by current and retired military personnel.
USD recorded a pair of losses this afternoon on the final day of the San Diego Classic I. The Toreros fell to two top 25 teams, No. 12 Missouri Tigers 9-0, and No. 3 UCLA Bruins 13-0.
The Toreros held the Tigers scoreless through the first two innings on defense as Danielle Duhart led off the game offensively for USD by getting on base due to an error at third base. However, in the third inning, Missouri posted six runs to take a 6-0 lead. They also scored three more runs to take a 9-0 lead over USD. The Toreros were unable to post any runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the mercy rule took effect ending the game at 9-0.
In the final game of the tournament, USD faced off against the Bruins. Jennifer Ellenbeck recorded one strikeout in the first inning. UCLA tallied a run in the second inning as they took the lead. San Diego played three solid innings of defense holding the Bruins scoreless. USD allowed five runs in the sixth inning as the Bruins took a 6-0 lead, and then allowed seven runs in the seventh inning winning the game 13-0.
The Toreros fall to 3-12 overall. Jennifer Ellenbeck struck out three Bruins while Kaitlin Healy recorded four strike outs against Missouri. Taylor Hensley recorded a double against Missouri. Both Lindsey Fleet and Ellenbeck recorded doubles against the Bruins.
San Diego returns to action on Sunday, March 8 for a double header against Miami (Ohio) starting at 12:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
