SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team recorded back to back victories over the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Thursday afternoon. The Toreros won 9-1 in game one followed by an 8-3 victory in game two.
Freshman catcher Taylor Hensley recorded her third homerun of the season in game one in the second inning starting off the Torero scoring run to follow in later innings.
In game one, San Diego scored a single run in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead. San Diego's big scoring inning came in the fourth when they tallied four runs.
Jennifer Ellenbeck led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch during Keely Helbock's at-bat. Helbock flied out to the catcher for the first out. Cathy Wineinger laid down a bunt single to the pitcher and beat the throw and then advanced to second base on the throw moving Ellenbeck to third base. Kristen Gensler singled up the middle and also advanced on the throw scoring Ellenbeck and moving Wineinger to third base. Megan Walsh then singled up the middle scoring Gensler and Wineinger. Walsh advanced on a wild pitch during Casciola's at-bat. Casciola sent a ball into right field for an RBI single scoring Walsh for a 6-0 lead. Celeste Soto singled up the middle moving Casciola to second base. Taryn Keenan flied out to left field and Hensley struck out looking to end the inning.
San Diego recorded three more runs in the sixth inning to end the game 9-1 because of the eight-run rule.
In game two, North Dakota scored a single run in the second inning and San Diego responded to keep the game tied up. The Fighting Sioux scored a second run in the third inning and the Toreros again matched them with a run of their own tying the game up at 2-2. North Dakota scored a third run in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. USD responded by pushing across six runs. The Toreros had two doubles in the inning (Megan Walsh and Celeste Soto) as part of the six run inning. San Diego went on to defeat North Dakota 8-3.
Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched a complete game in game one striking out seven batters in six innings of work. Katie Jo Nelson pitched 4.2 innings of work striking out six batters.
USD travels across town to take on UC San Diego in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. at the Triton Softball Complex on Sunday, March 22.
