SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore third baseman Victor Sanchez hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the University of San Diego baseball team to a 4-3 win over Brown University in the first game of a double-header Saturday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
With the Toreros and Bears tied at three, USD (13-9) went to work in the bottom of the 10th inning. Sean Nicol got things started with a single to left field and moved to second on a Chris Engell sacrifice bunt. After Nicol moved to third in a wild pitch, Sanchez hit an RBI single to the shortstop to give USD the victory.
The Bears (1-6) got on the scoreboard first, as they scored one run on two hits. The Brown run came on Ryan Zrenda RBI single to give Brown a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros then answered in the bottom of the second inning by scoring two runs on three hits. Victor Sanchez led off the inning with a solo home run. Zach Walters then doubled, moved to third on a Bryan Haar single to left field and came across on a fielding error by the Brown left fielder to give USD a 2-1 lead.
USD added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, by scoring one run on three hits. Tony Strazzara got things started with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a Nicol single. Engell then drove in Strazzara with an RBI infield single to give USD a 3-1 lead.
Brown then evened things up in the top of the eighth inning by scoring two runs on two hits. The Brown runs came on a Matt Nuzzo two-run single, which set the stage for the exciting bottom of the 10th inning heroics.
Offensively for the Toreros, Walters led the way as he went a perfect 4-for-4 with one double and one run score. Sanchez also looked good offensively as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one home run.
USD's Kyle Blair kept the Bear batters off balance all day as he allowed one run on three hits, while striking out nine in 7.0 innings of work. AJ Griffin (2-1) was credited with the win as he allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in 3.0 innings of work. Brown's Matthew Kimball (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of work.
