SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team squared off on the diamond against the Cal State University San Marcos Cougars Friday evening in a doubleheader at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros won game one 4-2 then fell in game two 2-4.
USD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the Cougars thanks to a Lindsey Fleet two-RBI single to the outfield.
Kristen Gensler led off the inning with a single to the outfield. Megan Walsh sacrifice bunted Gensler over to second base. Carey Casciola took base on balls. Celeste Soto took base on an error by the shortstop followed by a pop-out by Taylor Hensley. Lindsey Fleet singled deep up the middle into the outfield for a two-RBI single as USD took a 2-0 lead. The inning ended with Ellenbeck striking out.
San Diego added to their lead when Lindsey Fleet hit another RBI single into the outfield to lift USD to a 3-0 lead. The Cougars responded in the fourth inning putting up two runs cutting the San Diego lead 3-2. The Toreros added an insurance run in the sixth inning as USD won the game 4-2.
In game two, San Diego fell behind early when San Marcos earned a single run in the first inning and the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. They scored a third run in the fourth inning and a fourth run in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. San Diego answered in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored a run to cut the lead to 4-1. USD also scored a second run in the seventh inning on a late rally but came up short as the Cougars went onto win 4-2.
USD's Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched a complete game one striking out two batters and holding San Marcos to only five hits. In game two, Katie Jo Nelson struck out three batters in 4.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will take on crosstown rival San Diego State on Wednesday, April 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
