SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (7-4) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-3 loss to cross-town rival San Diego State University (5-5) Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
SDSU's All-American right-hander Stephen Strasburg (3-0) was credited with the win on the mound for the Aztecs with an 18 strikeout performance. He allowed two runs on five hits in 8.0 innings of work. Addison Reed was credited with the save as he allowed one run on three hits in one complete inning of work.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning on a Brandon Decker RBI single to give SDSU a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros answered right back as they scored one run in their half of the inning. Sean Nicol led off the inning with a ground-rule double and Victor Sanchez drove in Nicol with a RBI single to right center field.
The Toreros then took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Nick McCoy solo home run. The home run marked only the second home run Strasburg has surrendered in his three-year career.
SDSU then tied the game up in the top of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded Ryan O'Sullivan RBI walk. SDSU then added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning and an insurance run in the top of the ninth to cap their scoring for the day.
In the ninth inning, USD put on a late rally, scoring one run on three hits. Back-to-back singles by Nicol and James Meador began the inning and Zach Walters drove in the lone run of the game with a RBI single to put the game at its final of 5-3.
Meador and Nicol led the Torero offense as they both went 2-for-4.
Darin Campbell (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium for a 6 p.m. showdown with the Aztecs.
