SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team fell 2-0 to crosstown rival San Diego State Wednesday evening wrapping up their 2009 home-and-away series against the Aztecs.
Lindsey Fleet recorded a single in an attempt to get the offense started during the fourth inning followed by Celeste Soto taking base-on-balls. However the Toreros were unable to push across a run. USD's defense was working hard to keep SDSU from scoring and kept the game at 0-0 through the fourth inning.
The Aztecs broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Monica Alnes got a hit into shallow right field that Taryn Keenan attempted to catch by diving for it, but the ball ended up at the wall. Alnes scored on the play. San Diego State scored the final run in the seventh inning with a runner on third base. A single scored the runner from third base as the Aztecs took a 2-0 lead. USD's offense was unable to push across a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Lindsay Fleet records her 26th hit of the season, now tied with Carey Casciola. Pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck went the distance recording her 10th complete game striking out six batters in seven innings of work.
San Diego opens up Pacific Coast Softball Conference play this weekend on the road as they face the Sacramento State Hornets in Northern California. The Toreros have games scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on both Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5.
