Toreros Fall to Roadrunners

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team posted two losses Wednesday afternoon to the Cal-State Bakersfield Roadrunners falling 5-2 in game one and 12-3 in game two.

Taylor Hensley had a pair of RBI doubles, one in each game, while teammate Taryn Keenan had a two-run homerun in game two.

In game one, the Roadrunners quickly scored two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third inning. The Toreros chipped away at the Bakersfield lead. With two outs in the fourth inning, Celeste Soto punched one through the left side for a single. Taylor Hensley followed with a double to deep right field allowing Soto to score as USD cut the lead 5-1. In the fifth inning, Alyssa Schott hit a single to shortstop beating the throw. Cathy Wineinger put a sacrifice bunt into play to third base and was thrown out moving Schott over to second base and then easily took third base putting her in scoring position. Kristen Gensler hit a single to right field allowing Schott to score and cutting the lead 5-2. However USD was unable to record anymore runs.

Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched her 13th complete game of the season recording five strikeouts. Taylor Hensley recorded two doubles for USD.

In game two, San Diego fell behind 4-0 in the first inning. The Roadrunners then recorded eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 12-0 lead. The Toreros responded in the fourth inning when Lindsay Fleet lead off with a single up the middle. Kaslin Tucker came in for Fleet as a pinch runner. Celeste Soto put a hit into play where the ball dropped dead in front of home plate for the catcher to field as she was thrown out at first base moving Tucker to second base. Taylor Hensley traded places with Tucker as she sent a ball deep to left field for her third double of the day allowing Schott to score cutting the Roadrunner lead to 12-1. Taryn Keenan followed with a shot deep to left field for a two-run homerun, her second of the season bringing USD to within nine runs of Bakersfield. However, the Roadrunners would go onto to win 12-3 over the Toreros.

San Diego falls to 13-29 on the season as they prepare for back-to-back conference road trips. The Toreros have the rest of the week to prepare for Loyola Marymount scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19 at Smith Field in Los Angeles, California. They face Santa Clara the following weekend.
