MORAGA, Calif. - The 24th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision Saint Mary's College Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 24-15 overall, 7-4 in the WCC and have dropped their second straight WCC series. With the win, the Gaels improve to 23-17 overall and 5-6 in the WCC.
The Gaels scored all five of their runs in the second inning. The SMC runs came on pass ball, a Michael Castelum RBI single, a bases loaded Anthony Aliotti walk, and a two-run Troy Channing double to give SMC a 5-0 lead.
The Toreros took back two runs in the top of the sixth inning. James Meador got things going with a single up the middle and he moved to third when Zach Walters reached on a SMC fielding error by the second baseman. Steven Chatwood then doubled in Meador and Tony Strazzara loaded the bases with a walk. Jon Hotta then pushed across the final run on a walk to cut the lead to three at 5-2.
The Toreros then managed to get one more run in the top of the ninth inning on a Chris Engell RBI single to left field to put the game at its final of 5-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Sean Nicol, Meador and Chatwood led the way as they all went 2-for-5 with Chatwood adding in an RBI.
Matt Thomson (5-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work. Scott Schineider (4-4) was credited with the win for the Gaels, as he allowed two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. Berl was credited with his third save of the season, as he allowed one run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the three-game series with Saint Mary's at 1 p.m.
