Toreros Win Back-To-Back Conference Games Over LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team came back from behind twice this afternoon against PCSC opponent Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader that would lift USD to 5-5 in conference. The Toreros defeated the conference leaders 5-2 in game one and 4-1 in game one.

It was a pitcher's duel through the first two innings of play as neither team scored any runs or recorded any hits. LMU broke the ice when they took a 2-0 lead over the Toreros. In the fifth inning, USD cut the lead when they scored one run. Kristen Gensler grounded out to the short stop to lead off the inning. Jennifer Ellenbeck took base on balls and then advanced to second base on an illegal pitch. Lindsay Fleet grounded out to shortstop moving Ellenbeck over to third base. Celeste Soto reached on a fielding error by the LMU third base allowing Ellenbeck to score. The inning ended with Hensley grounding out to second base.

Lindsay Fleet and Taylor Hensley helped USD to take the lead with two homeruns in the seventh inning, then played solid defense in the bottom half of the inning to take game one. Megan Walsh pinch hit for Cathy Wineinger. Walsh grounded out to third base. Kristen Gensler reached on a dropped fly ball by the shortstop and advanced to second base. Jennifer Ellenbeck struck out swinging for the second out. Lindsay Fleet hit a two-run homerun to left centerfield scoring Gensler. Celeste Soto got on base due to a muffed throw. Taylor Hensley hit a two-run homerun of her own down the left field line scoring Soto as the Toreros went on to win 5-2.

Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched seven innings striking out eight batters on the day. Hensley records her seventh homerun of the season leading the team while Fleet records her first of the season for USD.

In game two, the Toreros again found themselves down 1-0 in the third inning only to come back for the 4-1 victory. With two outs in the fifth inning, Cathy Wineinger broke open the USD scoring when she hit a solo homerun over centerfield tying the game at 1-1. With one out, Fleet singled to left centerfield. Soto followed with a single to right field moving Fleet to second base. Taylor Lawrence came in to pinch-run for Fleet at second base. Taylor Hensley hit an RBI-single up the middle scoring Lawrence from second base and allowing Soto to advance to third base. Taryn Keenan hit a sacrifice fly out to centerfield bringing in USD's second run as Soto scored giving the Toreros a 3-1 lead. San Diego scored their fourth run of the game in the seventh inning as they went on to win 4-1.

Kaitlin Healy pitched seven innings striking out three batters for the Toreros. Wineinger recorded her second homerun as well as her third double of the season.

USD improves to 15-29 overall on the season and 5-5 in PCSC action. Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Los Angeles, California.
