LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego split Sunday afternoon against the LMU Lions winning game one 10-2 in six innings and then fell 3-2 in game two. The Toreros improve to 6-6 in PCSC play and 16-30 overall.
Celeste Soto hit a two-run homerun as well as a double for USD in game one while the team recorded runs in every inning of the game.
Soto's RBI double in the first inning started off the scoring for San Diego. Kristen Gensler took base on balls and then was thrown out at second base on a fielder's choice bunt by Jennifer Ellenbeck who made it safely to first base. Lindsay Fleet singled through the left side moving Ellenbeck to second base. Soto hit an RBI double to left field scoring Ellenbeck and advancing Fleet to third base. Hensley took base on balls loading the bases. Taryn Keenan hit a sacrifice fly to second base allowing Fleet to score and Soto to advance to third base. The inning ended as Alyssa Schott grounded out to shortstop with the Toreros ahead 2-0.
In the second inning, the Toreros continued to pull away during a two-out rally. Gensler got on base with a single down the left field line. Ellenbeck singled through the left side moving Gensler up to second base. LMU loaded the bases when Fleet was hit by a pitch which prompted a pitching change by the Lions. Soto hit a two-run single to left field scoring Gensler and Ellenbeck however Fleet was thrown out at second base ending the inning with the Toreros up 4-0.
LMU recorded one run in the third inning cutting the lead 4-1 while the Toreros responded with two runs to pull away 6-1. The Lions again tried to mount a comeback cutting the lead 6-2 in the fourth inning and the Toreros again pulled away with the help of a two-run homerun by Celeste Soto taking an 8-2 lead. San Diego would score a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings as USD went on to win 10-2.
Ellenbeck recorded another complete game and improves to 9-14 on the year while striking out five LMU batters on the day. Soto records her second homerun of the season and her 10th double on the year.
In game two, San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning with a double by Ellenbeck putting two runs in scoring position. Gensler lead off the inning with a single to centerfield. Ellenbeck doubled down the left field line moving Gensler all the way to third base. Fleet would sacrifice fly out to left field allowing Gensler to score and advancing Elenbeck to third base. Soto singled to the pitcher while Ellenbeck held up at third base. Taylor Hensley hit an RBI single up the middle moving Soto around to second base and allowing Ellenbeck to score to take a 2-0 lead. Taryn Keenan flied out to centerfield and Alyssa Schott struck out swinging to end the inning.
LMU tied the game in the sixth inning 2-2 and would take the lead with one run in the seventh inning 3-2. San Diego was unable to record the tying run as LMU went on to win.
Kaitlin Healy improves to 6-6 on the season from the pitcher's circle going seven innings and striking out two batters. Ellenbeck would score her third double of the season.
San Diego returns to the softball diamond to take on the Santa Clara Broncos in a four game series scheduled to start Saturday, April 25 at 12:00 p.m. at West Valley College Softball Field.
