LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team recorded an 8-5 win over the UC San Diego Tritons wrapping up their inter-city play and improving to 11-26 on the season.
Kristen Gensler had a double to start the game while teammate Celeste Soto sent a ball deep into left centerfield for a three-RBI homerun in the sixth inning.
USD started the game off with a solid five-run first inning. Gensler doubled to right centerfield. Megan Walsh got on base from an error while Gensler advanced to third base. Lindsay Fleet singled down the right field line scoring Gensler and advancing Walsh to third base. Soto grounded out to shortstop. Taryn Keenan walked followed by a Keely Helbock single scoring Lindsey Fleet to take a 3-0 lead. Cathy Wineinger hit a two-RBI single down the right field line scoring Keenan and Helbock. Taylor Lawrence struck out to end the inning as the Toreros led 5-0.
The Tritons cut the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning. USD recorded another three runs in the sixth inning with Fleet and Ellenbeck were on base when Celeste Soto hit a homerun over left centerfield to take an 8-1 lead over the Tritons. UCSD scored four runs in the seventh inning cutting the Torero's lead to three runs, however San Diego got out of the inning and won the game at 8-5.
Kaitlin Healy pitched a complete game striking out two batters on the evening.
The Toreros return to the diamond this weekend as they continue PCSC conference play this weekend against the Portland State Vikings starting on Friday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex. They wrap up at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
