Final Stats
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped their final West Coast Conference game of the season, 9-1, to the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 28-25 overall and finish WCC play at 11-10. With the win, the Dons improve to 26-26 overall and 10-8 in the WCC.
The Dons got on the scoreboard first, as they took advantage of a USD fielding error to grab the early 1-0 lead. The USF run came after Zack Kim led off the game with a single, then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. He then came across on a sacrifice fly by Derek Poppert.
The Toreros then answered back in the bottom of the first inning, as they scored one run on two hits. Sean Nicol led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a Chris Engell fly out to left field. James Meador then drove in Nicol with a RBI sacrifice fly to left field, which knotted the score at 1-1.
USF would go on to score eight unanswered runs, one in each of the third and sixth innings, and a big six-run top of the fifth to put the game at its final of 9-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Nicol led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Zach Walters was the only other Torero to record multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4.
Matt Hauser (4-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Matt Hiserman (4-5) picked up the win on the mound for the Dons, as he allowed one run on seven hits, while striking out eight in 9.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they conclude the season with a 6 p.m. game against UC Irvine.
