SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Taylor Housley's goal in the 33rd minute of action lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a 1-0 upset win over No. 15 USC Friday evening in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 6-4-2 overall, complete a two-game sweep over the Trojans, and USD remains the only team of the season to clam a victory against USC. With the loss, the Trojans fall to 7-2-2 overall.
In a close nit battle in the first half, both teams had their scoring opportunities, but the Toreros were the ones who were able to get a goal. In the 33rd minute of action, the Toreros had a throw in, and the ball found the feet of Kelley McCloskey, who then send the ball into a crowded goal box, where Devany Savage flicked the ball with her head to the feet of Housley, who in turn hit a one-timer that hit off the post, then bounced back to the goalkeeper, and bounced off the `keepers shoulder into the back net to give USD the victory.
The Trojans had one of their best scoring opportunities come in the 27th minute of action, as Alyssa Davila rocketed off a shot from just above the goal box on the left side, and USD's junior goalkeeper Courtney Parsons was there to punch away the ball, to preserve the shutout.
The Toreros were slightly outshot, 10-8, in the match, and the two teams were even in corner kicks at two a piece.
Parsons picked up the shutout win in goal for the Toreros as she recorded six saves against 10 shots, and her counterpart, Shelby Church, was saddled with the loss fort the Trojans as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves.
San Diego will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 6 p.m. non-conference match at Titan Stadium.
