SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman striker Brittany Held's goal in the 50th minute of action lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win over Pepperdine University in a West Coast Conference match Friday evening at USD's Torero Stadium.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Toreros (10-7-2, 3-3-0 WCC) turned to its young striker, and she delivered in a big way. Junior forward Stephanie Ochs went streaking down the right side of the field, and crossed the ball to senior midfielder Jackie Zinke, who in turn slipped the ball over to Held who hit a laser strike into the back of the net to give USD a 2-1 win.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as in the 14th minute of play, Ochs sent the ball into a crowded goal box, where, sophomore midfielder Sierra Ferreira headed the ball off the post and to the feet of Zinke, who in turn eased the ball into the back of the net to give USD a early 1-0 lead.
The Waves then evened the match up in the 21st minute of action, as Michelle Manning was able to control a pass from Laura Cole, and slipped it past the Torero defense to move the score to 1-1.
The Toreros outshot Pepperdine 10-8 and held 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Courtney Parsons was credited with the win in goal for the Toreros as she allowed one goal and recorded five saves. Her counterpart, Roxanne Barker, was saddled with the loss in goal for the Waves as she allowed two goals and recorded two saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Loyola Marymount Lions in a final effort to make the NCAA postseason. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m.
