LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team fell in today's games at the Long Beach State Invitational losing 6-5 to Purdue and 4-3 to UNLV Saturday at Mayfair Park.
The Toreros fall to 5-12 overall in the non-conference season with one game remaining on Sunday.
In game one, the Toreros played solid defense against the Boilermakers as starter Jennifer Ellenbeck struck out two batters. Purdue would score first in the third inning and three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. San Diego answered with two runs in the sixth inning cutting the Purdue lead 4-2. Taylor Hensley hit an RBI-single up the middle pushing Danielle Duhart across home followed by Kristen Gensler hitting a fielder's choice picking up the RBI scoring Jennifer Ellenbeck.
USD pushed across three more runs in the seventh inning taking the lead over Purdue 5-4. Lauren Tomey lead off the inning with a walk followed by Mickelle Escobar getting walked too. Danielle Duhart would single to third base loading the bases. Megan Walsh struck out and Ellenbeck would hit a two RBI-single up the middle scoring Tomey and Escobar. Celeste Soto grounded out to second base followed by Taylor Hensley hitting an RBI-single through the left side into the outfield scoring Duhart. Kristen Gensler ended the inning striking out. The Boilermakers would score two runs in the bottom half of the inning to defeat the Toreros 6-5.
In game two, the Rebels picked up one run in the first and second inning taking a 2-0 lead. San Diego responded in the third inning when Duhart got on base by a UNLV error. Walsh would sacrifice bunt moving Duhart to second base. Ellenbeck would trade places with Duhart when she hit an RBI-double to left field cutting the Rebel lead 2-1. Soto kept the momentum alive when she hit an RBI-double to right-center field scoring Ellenbeck as the Toreros tied it up at 2-2. Hensley and Gensler ended the inning on a ground out. UNLV would pick up two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. San Diego made a solid effort to take back the lead when they scored one run in the fifth inning, however they were unable to push across any more runs as the Rebels went on to win 4-3.
Carey Casciola lead the team today hitting 3-for-6 on the day. Duhart finished 3-for-8 with three runs scored, while Soto would hit 2-for-6 two doubles and one RBI.
Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched her fifth complete game of the season striking out four batters. Chelsea Velovich pitched four innings of work with three strike outs.
San Diego will face Long Beach State on Sunday, March 14 at 3:45 p.m. at Mayfair field to wrap up the Long Beach State Tournament.
