LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team had a solid 1-0 lead going into the fifth inning until Long Beach State recorded one run in the sixth inning to tie the game sending it into extra innings when Long Beach State put up a five spot in the eighth inning to take the game. USD falls to 5-13 overall on the season.
The Toreros recorded two doubles early on in the game as Taylor Hensley got in scoring position in the second inning, and Jennifer Ellenbeck hit a double in the third inning. The Toreros had 10 hits in the game, their second highest team total of the season.
San Diego's Megan Walsh lead off with a walk and stole second base as Ellenbeck popped out to second base while Celeste Soto struck out swinging. Hensley took base on balls and Kristen Gensler also walked to load the bases. Carey Casciola hit an RBI-single to shortstop scoring Walsh from third base to take a 1-0 lead. Allison Stalberger popped out to short stop to end the inning.
In the sixth inning, Long Beach State recorded one run to tie the game. In the eighth inning, Long Beach State recorded five runs taking a 6-1 lead over USD for the win.
The Toreros return home to San Diego to start a nine-game homestand starting with a doubleheader against North Dakota on Wednesday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
