March 21, 2010

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team fell 9-2 on the final day of the San Diego Classic II tournament at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros paid tribute prior to the game with a salute to the armed forces as Captain Ricky L. Williamson threw out the ceremonial first pitch along with the Makin Island Ceremonial Color Guard and Choir presented the colors and sang the national anthem.

"San Diego is a huge military town and USD has a great partnership with Naval Base San Diego as well as other branches of the armed forces, so any chance we get to pay tribute to those soldiers is a great honor for our team and the Athletic Department," said head coach Melissa McElvain.

After a scoreless first inning, the Beavers jumped out to a three run lead in the second inning. The Torero defense held solid in the third inning as neither team scored. San Diego responded in the fourth inning with a single run cutting the OSU lead to two. Danielle Duhart lead off with a walk and then scored on a Taylor Hensley RBI-double to left field lifting the Toreros to 3-1. More solid defense by San Diego left Oregon State scoreless in the top of the fifth and USD pulled to within one run in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Cathy Wineinger hit a shot down the right field line for a single. Kristen Gensler would fly out for the second out of the inning. Duhart singled to the shortstop moving Wineinger up to second base. Hensley would record her second double of the day picking up an RBI as Wineinger scored cutting the OSU lead to 3-2. Oregon State would pull away with a four-run sixth inning and a two run seventh inning as USD fell 9-2.

Taylor Hensley hit 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Celeste Soto tallied one double for USD on the day.

Jennifer Ellenbeck took the loss after striking out three batters in four innings of work and falls to 6-8 on the season.

The Toreros fall to 9-17 overall on the season as they prepare for a doubleheader at home against UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, March 23 set for 12:00 at the USD Softball Complex.
