SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Chelsea Kamai started a two-out rally the third inning with a double to the outfield which lead to two runs scoring as the Toreros defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 2-1 in game one of their doubleheader. The Toreros would fall 4-0 in game two to the Hornets.
With the split, San Diego moves to 12-21 on the season and 1-3 in PCSC play. The Hornets move to 14-25 overall and 4-1 in conference.
In game one, the bats erupted when freshman Chelsea Kamai tattooed a double to the left-center gap starting a two-out rally while recording her first career hit for the Toreros. Kristen Gensler followed with a single to the pitcher bringing up Danielle Duhart who hit an RBI single to shortstop scoring Kamai and pushing Gensler to second base. Taylor Hensley sent a ball deep into the corner for an RBI single to left field scoring Gensler from second base. The Toreros took back the lead 2-1 over the Hornets as they recorded two runs on four hits in the inning.
In game two, the toreros fell behind 1-0 in the third innings to Sacramento State. The Hornets would hit a solo homerun and scored two extra runs in the sixth inning going on to win 4-0. San Diego would record five hits despite the shutout.
Offensively for USD, Danielle Duhart lead the team hitting 3-for-7 on the day with one RBI. Chelsea Kamai finished 1-for-3 with one double, and one run scored.
Jennifer Ellenbeck improves to 9-10 on the season pitching a complete game and striking out five batters. Kaitlin Healy takes the loss pitching 5.2 innings and striking out two batters.
The Toreros and Hornets wrap up their conference series on Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
