BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Thanks to a four run seventh inning, the USD Toreros picked up a 7-6 win over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon in a PSCS doubleheader. The Toreros fell 4-3 in game one to the Roadrunners despite hitting two homeruns in the final two innings.
The Toreros improve to 14-23 overall on the season and 3-5 in the PCSC. Cal State Bakersfield moves to 17-27 overall and 5-5 on the season.
In their 7-6 game two victory, USD's solid offense pushed them ahead as they recorded four runs on three hits. Danielle Duhart singled to center field to start off the inning followed by a pop up by Taylor Hensley for the first out. Celeste Soto walked moving Duhart to second base and both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch. Jennifer Ellenbeck put an RBI-fielder's choice into play allowing Duhart to score and Soto to advance to third base. Carey Casciola followed with an RBI-fielder's choice for the Toreros scoring Soto and moving Ellenbeck to second base. Megan Walsh hit an RBI-single to center field and took an extra base ending up at second while Ellenbeck scored and Casciola moved to third base. After a Roadrunner pitching change, Lauren Tomey pinch hit and picked up an RBI-sacrifice fly scoring Casciola to take a 7-6 lead as the Toreros picked up the win over the Roadrunners.
In the early game, USD fell behind 3-0 after the first inning. In the sixth inning, Taylor Hensley airmailed a ball deep over the center field fence for a two-RBI homerun and tallying her sixth homerun of the season. Jennifer Ellenbeck followed in the seventh inning tying the game at 3-3 with a homerun of her own, her fifth of the season. However Bakersfield would pick up one run in the bottom half of the inning to win 4-3.
Offensively on the day, Ellenbeck finished 3-for-6 with one homerun, two runs scored, and two RBI. Carey Casciola finished 2-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored. Kristen Gensler hit a double on the day while Hensley hit a homerun of her own.
Kaitlin Healy picks up with win from the circle improving to 2-6 on the season pitching her third complete game of the season. Ellenbeck falls to 10-11 striking out four batters in 6.1 innings of work.
The Toreros and Roadrunners face off again on Sunday, April 25 for their final PCSC doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. from the RR Softball Complex.
