Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Eight unanswered runs propelled the Gales of Saint Mary's College to an 8-1 win over the 15th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Cunningham Stadium.

San Diego (35-20, 18-2 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as in the second inning, James Meador led things off by launching his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot, over the right field fence to give USD a 1-0 lead.

After the Gaels (19-31-1, 8-12 WCC) scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead, Saint Mary's would push across four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the momentum. The Gaels runs came on a bases-loaded walk, Michael Ciopolla two-run single, and a Shawn O'Brien RBI fielder's choice to give the Gaels a 6-1 lead.

The Gaels then added one more run in the top of both the eighth and ninth innings to cap their scoring for the day and put the game at its final of 8-1.

Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way as he went 1-for-1 with a home run and one RBI.

Sammy Solis (9-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work. Kyle Barraclough (6-6) was credited with the win for the Gaels, as he allowed one run on four hits in 5.0 innings of work. Taylor Reid picked up his first save of the season as he allowed no runs on two hits in 4.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the regular-season with a 1 p.m. WCC game against Saint Mary's.
