SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego is riding a six game winning streak as they swept the Santa Clara University Broncos 6-5 and 4-0 in a doubleheader at home Saturday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.
USD has won eight of their last nine games improving to 21-24 on the season and catapulted into second place in the PCSC standings with a 10-6 mark. Santa Clara falls to 9-34 overall and 1-17 in league play.
Tied 5-5 going into the sixth inning, freshman Lauren Tomey punched through an RBI-single to right field to score the tie-breaking run as the Toreros went onto win 6-5. Both teams jockeyed for control of the game with Santa Clara jumping out to a 2-0 lead. The Toreros responded in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead over the Broncos. Santa Clara put a three-spot in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead over USD. Taylor Hensley would come up big in the fifth inning when she sent a ball deep over center field for a tw0-RBI homerun tying the game at 5-5. In the sixth inning, Megan Walsh lead off with a single through the left side and then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Mickell Escobar. Lauren Tomey hit a solid single to deep right field picking up an RBI scoring Walsh from second base as the Toreros went on to win 6-5.
In the fifth inning during game two, Hensley put a double into play scoring one run to start a rally. With a 1-0 lead, Taylor Lawrence singled through the left side and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Kristen Gensler. Duhart flied out to center field and Hensley hit her RBI-double scoring Lawrence. Celeste Soto walked and Ellenbeck singled up the middle moving Soto to third base and scoring Hensley. Casciola reached on an RBI-fielder's choice scoring Soto as the Toreros recorded three runs on three hits and went on to win 4-0 over the Broncos completing the day one sweep.
From the circle, Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched a complete game striking out six batters in 7.0 innings of work. She improves to 14-11 on the season. Kaitlin Healy pitched a complete game walking only one batter and striking out five Broncos in 7.0 innings of work. She improves to 4-7 on the season.
Hensley lead the team offensively with a combined 3-for-6 on the day with one homerun, her tenth of the season, with three RBI, one double, and two runs scored. Gensler finished 3-for-7 with one RBI while Soto finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
San Diego returns to wrap up the PCSC series with Santa Clara on Sunday, May 9 with a double header scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. at the USD Softball complex. With tomorrow being the final game of the regular season, USD will take a moment to honor the six seniors who will be playing in their final game at the USD Softball Complex. The ceremony will begin at approximately 11:40.
