SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team upended the University of Arizona, 4-1, in a non-conference match Friday evening at USD's Torero Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros remain perfect on the season at 2-0-0 and are also undefeated against the PAC-10. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 0-1-0 on the young season.
The Toreros scored their first goal in the 13th minute of action, as junior forward Stephanie Ochs controlled a cross from Devany Savage and Kelley McCloskey to hit a laser strike into a open net to give USD the early momentum.
San Diego keep the pressure on as in the 29th minute of action, senior midfielder, and former Wildcat, Jackie Zinke scored her first goal of the season. She stole the ball from a Arizona defender right in front of the goal and punched it into the back of the net to give USD a 2-0 advantage.
The Toreros were not done scoring in the first half yet, as they scored a third goal in the 38th minute of action. Sophomore McCloskey rocketed off a shot that was blocked and fell to the feet of Sierra Ferreira and, and Ferreira then punched it right past the Arizona goalkeeper to give USD a comfortable 3-0 lead going into half time.
The Toreros then put the match completely out of reach in the 52nd minute of action as Savage controlled a cross from Natalie Garcia and was able to score her second goal in as many games to cap the Toreros scoring for the day.
Ten seconds later, the Wildcats spoiled the shutout for USD, as Brittany Cole was able to slip past the USD defense and score a chip shot to put the match at its final of 4-1.
Courtney Parsons picked up the win in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves. Her counterpart, Lorena Aragon, was saddled with the loss as she allowed four goals and recorded two saves.
San Diego outshot Arizona 10-4 and held a 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they host the University of Michigan in a 5 p.m. match at Torero Stadium.
