HONOLULU, Hawaii - The 22nd-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a 25-14, 25-19, 25-21 decision to No. 16 UCLA Saturday evening in the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
For the second consecutive match, senior outside hitter Amy Mahinalani DeGroot led the Toreros' offense as she recorded 10 kills on 24 attempts to post a .375 attack percentage. Both Chloe Ferrari and Ali Troost chipped in with eight kills apiece to round off the offensive attack.
In the first set, USD captured the first point of the match on a UCLA attack error, but then Bruins then responded with a 6-1 run to gain the early momentum. UCLA continued its momentum as they used a 9-5 run to take a 15-6 lead, and they never looked back as they went on to claim the first set 25-14.
In the second set, the Toreros grabbed the early momentum as they raced out to a 5-2 lead. However that lead was short lived, as UCLA put together a 9-4 run to regain the momentum and take a 14-10 lead. USD could not pull any closer than three for the remainder of the set.
In the third and final set, UCLA jumped out to a 12-5 lead, but the Toreros then began to chip away at the lead. A Ferrari kill then ignited a 9-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Ashton Basch kill to even the score up at 14-14. The two teams then traded point-for-point over the next several rallies, before UCLA went on a 3-0 spurt to take a 18-15 lead, and they never surrendered that margin as they went on to take the third set 25-21.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday at 6 p.m. when they conclude play in the Tournament against Kansas State University.
