SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego swimming and diving team recorded a win over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon finishing ahead of the Lions 66-52 at the USD Relay Invitational at the USD Swim Complex.
The Toreros hosted the unique event that brought former WAC opponents Boise State and San Jose State to Alcala Park for the 10 event invitational. Boise State University took first place overall with 184 points followed by San Jose State in second place with 138. The Toreros finished up third with 66 and the Lions fourth with 52.
San Diego flexed their muscles in the Crescendo Event (50 yard, 100, 150, 200) taking a team high second place beating out San Jose State by a half-second in 4:37.06. Francesca Finucane led off followed by Melissa Andruzzi, Milica Ostojoc, and Sarah Geerdes.
The Toreros took third place in the 200 butterfly relay (Kelly Stone, Eleanor Phillips, Sarah Geerdes) with a time of 2:58.04. They took third in the 300 breaststroke relay (Andruzzi, Haley Pittman, Geerdes) with a time of 3:24.46. The Toreros took third in the 400 yard medley relay (Kristyn Deckard, Geerdes, Stone, and Finucane) with a time of 3:59.26, and had a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (Andruzzi, Finucane, Stone, and Geerdes) with a mark of 3:36.49.
San Diego returns to the pool for another unique swimming event, a Sprint Eliminator with Colorado State and crosstown rival San Diego State. The format is the top 16 times combined from all three schools in the 50 yard event for each stroke enter the first round. Those top 16 swimmers compete and the top eight swimmers move on to compete again, and then the top three compete for the champion of that stroke.
The Sprint Eliminator will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11 at the USD Swim Complex.
