HOUSTON —
Sydney Wilson capped a memorable 2026 Big West Conference Championships with a performance for the record books on Saturday, winning the 1650 yard freestyle in a new University of San Diego school record while also clinching an automatic "A" cut to the National Invitational Championship. The sophomore's winning time of 16:36.45 bested her own seed time by nearly 19 seconds and stood atop the field from wire to wire, a dominant performance that served as the signature moment of a historic week. It was USD's first-ever appearance at the Big West Conference Championships, with Wilson delivering the program a title in its conference debut.
Making the victory even sweeter, junior
Skylar Bruner joined Wilson on the podium with a third-place finish in the same event at 16:49.41, giving the Toreros a 1-3 showing in one of the meet's marquee distance events.
USD's backstroke corps also made its presence felt in the 200 yard backstroke, where the Toreros placed four swimmers across both the championship and consolation finals. Bruner added to her big day with an eighth-place finish in the championship final at 2:03.68, while
Gwendolyn Smith (1:59.80),
Milan Bever (2:01.48) and
Penelope Leonard (2:02.81) all contributed points in the consolation final.
In the 100 yard freestyle consolation final, Ally Diehl posted a fifth-place finish with a time of 50.39, while
Ava Delaney added points with a 50.80. The 200 yard breaststroke saw
Elise Sullivan (2:19.19),
Ava Craig (2:23.85) and
Olivia Anfinson (2:23.99) all score for USD in the consolation final, and
Erin Kau and
Elle Ramos contributed points in the 200 butterfly.
The Toreros closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, with Ally Diehl,
Mallory Paine,
Ava Delaney and
Analeis Vos combining for a time of 3:22.50.
Wilson's school record and NIC berth headline what was a strong championship showing for USD, with the sophomore distance ace now turning her attention toward the national stage.
