Toreros Open Big West Championships with Strong Wednesday Performance

USD posts pair of podium finishes in opening night relay events

HOUSTON, Texas — The University of San Diego swimming and diving program kicked off the 2026 Big West Conference Championships in impressive fashion on Wednesday evening, posting strong finishes in both relay events at the CRWC Natatorium. The Toreros entered two competitive relay squads in the Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay and the Women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, combining for a total of 60 team points to sit third in the early team standings — setting up USD for an exciting four-day run at the conference title.

Event 1 — Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay

San Diego's relay team of Haley Borja (FR), Elise Sullivan (JR), Ava Delaney (SR), and Analeis Vos (SR) delivered a gutsy performance in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, finishing third in the event with a time of 1:43.62. The Toreros edged out fourth-place Seattle U (1:43.99) by just 0.37 seconds in a close battle for the final podium spot, earning 32 team points.

The relay was a showcase of USD's depth across all four strokes. Borja got things started on the backstroke leg before Sullivan handed off on breaststroke, setting up a strong butterfly split from Delaney. Vos anchored the relay on freestyle, closing out the race to secure the podium finish. UC Santa Barbara won the event with a time of 1:37.69 — just under the previous meet record — while UC Davis finished second at 1:39.96. Both the University of Hawaii A team and UC San Diego A team were disqualified, leaving the door open for USD to capitalize with a clean swim.

Event 4 — Women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay

The Toreros put together another podium-worthy performance in the marquee relay of the night, the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, with the squad of Alison Diehl (FR), Alexandra Ostrom (SO), Anna Vermeulen (SR), and Skylar Bruner (JR) touching the wall in 7:23.25 to claim fifth place and earn an additional 28 points for the team total.

In a crowded field, USD's relay squad put together a competitive effort across all four legs. The race was won convincingly by UC San Diego, who shattered the previous meet record with a time of 7:11.42 — surpassing the old mark of 7:11.65 set just one year ago by the Tritons themselves at the 2025 championships. University of Hawaii (7:17.20), UC Davis (7:17.75), and UC Santa Barbara (7:18.35) rounded out the top four in a tightly contested race for the podium. USD's 7:23.25 performance held off Cal State Bakersfield (7:35.84) and Seattle U (7:37.55) to put the Toreros solidly in fifth.
