PROVO, Utah - Four different Toreros recorded double-digit kills paced by Sandra Lozic's 17 to help propel the 16th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Brigham Young University Saturday evening in a West Coast Conference match.
With the 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 win, the Toreros improve to 22-1 overall, move to 7-1 in the WCC, run their winning streak to nine, and complete a season sweep over the Cougars. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 16-7 overall and 5-4 in the WCC.
Lozic tied a career-high with 17 kills and had a career-high with 16 digs to post her second double-double of the season. Katie Hoekman and Carrie Baird had 13 kills apiece, with Baird recording 10 digs and Hoekman racking up five blocks and hitting for a .476 clip. Amber Tatsch was the final USD player in double-digit kills as she recorded 12. Rachel Alvey and Jianna Bonomi had 27 assists a piece in helping lead the Toreros to a .268 team attack percentage. Kandiss Anderson recorded 17 digs to lead the USD defense.
In the first set, the Cougars raced out to a 6-1 lead to grab the early momentum. Then a Tatsch kill sparked a 5-1 Torero run that was capped on a Lozic kill to pull the Toreros back to within one at 7-6. The two teams then began to trade point-for-point over the next several volleys with BYU not surrendering the lead. The Toreros would manage to tie the score up five times at 12-all, 13-all, 16-all, 17-all and again at 19-all, but the Cougars would not budge and allow the Toreros to capture the lead. Then after a Torero timeout and USD trailing 23-20, BYU would hang on to grab the first set 25-23.
In the second set, the Toreros managed to even up the match with a 25-20 win. BYU once again grabbed the early momentum as they raced out to a 5-0 lead. However, a Cougar service error sparked a 6-1 San Diego run that was bookended on a BYU attack error to even the score at 6-6. The Toreros kept the pedal to the medal as they strung together an 8-2 run to grab all the momentum and take a commanding 14-8 lead, forcing the Cougars into a timeout. BYU then went on an 8-2 run of their own to pull back to within two at 16-14. But that is as close as they would get, as a Chloe Ferrari kill ignited a 5-1 Torero run to give San Diego some breathing room and a 21-15 lead. USD never looked back as they went on to even the match at one set a piece heading into the break.
In the third set, it was a close battle right from the get-go, as the Cougars grabbed the early 3-1 lead, but the Toreros held them at arm's length, not allowing them to get too far ahead. USD would stay to within two points until they tied the score at 7-all, 8-all, and again at 9-all, and San Diego finally took the lead at 10-9 on a BYU attack error. USD then managed to hold onto a 2-3 point lead for the next several volley's, before the Cougars tied things up at 17-all, and the Cougars eventually took a 18-17 lead. Then a Jianna Bonomi kill sparked a 6-1 San Diego run that was capped on a Cougar attack error to give USD a 23-19 edge. The Toreros then held on to claim a 25-21 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth and final set, it was close in the early going with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Then with the score knotted up at 11-all, a Cougar attack error jump started a 6-2 Torero run that was bookended on a Hoekman kill to give USD all the momentum, and a 17-13 lead. The Cougars could not recover, as USD then went on to complete the win with a 25-17 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Monday as they head to Malibu to take on the 17th-ranked Pepperdine Waves in a 7 p.m. WCC match inside of Firestone Fieldhouse.
