SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sandra Lozic recorded a match-best 11 kills, but it wasn't enough, as the 20th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 West Coast Conference decision to No. 18 Pepperdine University Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 22-25, 24-26, 18-25 loss, the Toreros finish the regular-season with a 27-4 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the WCC, good for a second place finish. With the win, the Waves improve to 21-6 overall and 15-1 in the WCC. USD will now await the NCAA Selection show on Nov. 27 to learn when and where they will be playing in the NCAA tournament.
Lozic recorded her match-high 11 kills on 26 swings to hit for a .269 clip. Chloe Ferrari and Alaysia Brown each recorded eight kills. Rachel Alvey led the team with 20 assists, and Kandiss Anderson recorded 15 digs. As a team, USD hit .136, while Pepperdine hit .188.
In the first set, it was a close nit battle right out of the gates with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Late in the set, with the Waves n leading 22-18, a Lozic kill sparked a 3-0 spurt that pulled the Torero to within one at 22-21, but Pepperdine was able to hang on and claim a 24-22 win.
In the second set, The Toreros grabbed the early momentum as they raced out to a 3-1 lead, but that was short lived as Pepperdine soon tied the score at 4-4. The set remained a back and forth affair with each team having a lead not bigger than three. Late in the set with USD leading 21-18, the Waves went on a 3-1 run to force San Diego into a timeout. USD then grabbed the next point, but Pepperdine scored the next three to take a 24-23 lead. After a Katie Hoekman kill evened the score at 24, the Waves managed to get the final two points to take a 26-24 lead.
In the third and final set, Pepperdine grabbed the early momentum with a 7-4 run out of the gates, and they quickly built up their lead to eight at 12-4. USD just could not overcome this deficit as the Waves went on to complete the sweep with a 25-18 win.
