LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Despite being the better team on the field, the University of San Diego women's soccer team saw its 2011 season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Long beach State University Sunday afternoon in a wet soggy rain filled match in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament at Drake Stadium.
San Diego finished the season with a 12-8-2 overall record, and they have advanced further than any other USD women's soccer team in program history. With the win, the 49ers improve to 18-5-1 and they will advance on to play Duke on Friday in the Elite Eight.
Long Beach was able to score the match's lone goal in the 56th minute, as Ashley Roese found the ball at her feet, and she then one-timed it past the USD defense and into the back of the net.
San Diego had several good opportunities not go their way, as in the 83rd minute of play, Natalie Garcia nearly hit the equalizer, as she got the ball about 25 yards out and rifled off a shot that was bending ever so slightly to the top right corner of the goal. However the ball hit the cross bar, preventing the goal and giving LBSU a sign of relief.
San Diego also had a great scoring opportunity come when Stephanie Ochs was driving in the box, and she beat a defender and fired off a shot that the keeper blocked, and the ball then slipped away from her, but no USD player could get to it in time, again preventing the match to be tied up.
USD outshot the 49ers 9-8, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Courtney Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded one save. Kaitlyn Gustaves picked up the in goal for LBSU, as she allowed no goals and recorded two saves.
