SPOKANE, Wash. - Chloe Ferrari's career-high 21 kills helped lift the 21st-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team (24-3, 9-3 WCC) to a 3-1 win over Gonzaga University (7-16, 1-11 WCC) Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match at the Marin Center.
Ferrari recorded her match-high 21 kills on 32 swings, while only committing two attack errors to post an impressive .562 attack percentage. Sandra Lozic was the second of three Toreros in double-digit kills as she had 16, while Katie Hoekman had 13 kills and recorded five blocks. Kandiss Anderson recorded a match-high 28 digs, while Rachel Alvey had 31 assists and Jianna Bonomi had 33 assists in helping steer the USD offense to a .189 team attack percentage.
In the first set, the Zags grabbed the early momentum and took advantage of several USD miscue's, and raced out to a 7-2 lead, which forced San Diego into a timeout. Out of the break in action, the Toreros put together an 8-4 run to pull back to within one at 11-10. The two teams then battled back and forth for a bit, before the Bulldogs put together a 7-0 run to take a 20-12 lead, then they went on to claim a 25-18 win.
In the second set, San Diego found its stride, as an Amber Tatsch kill sparked a 9-3 run that was capped on a Ferrari block to give USD all the momentum, and forced Gonzaga into a timeout. The Toreros then held off the Zags at arms length never allowing the home team to get to within more than five. USD simply cruised their way to a 25-18 win, evening up the match at one set apiece heading into the break.
In the third set, the Toreros picked up right where they left off as a Lozic kill ignited an 8-3 San Diego run that was bookended on a Tatsch kill to give USD the early momentum. The Zags then clawed their way back to within three at 10-7, before a Hoekman kill sparked a 4-0 USD run to again give the Toreros the momentum and a 14-7 lead. GU didn't go away, as they got back to within one on three different occasions, with the last time coming at 19-18. Then a Hoekman kill, off a set from Bonomi, sparked a 6-2 Torero run to close out the frame and gave USD a 25-20 win.
In the fourth and final set, it was a barn burner, as San Diego claimed the win with a 32-30 win. This frame saw 17 ties and four different lead changes. Late in the frame with the score knotted up at 20-all, The Zags scored three consecutive points, which forced San Diego into a timeout. San Diego then went on a 4-2 run to tie things up at 24-all. USD then had match-point five times, before finally leading 31-30, and an Alvey service ace lifted USD to a thrilling 32-30 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they head to Portland, Ore. to take on the University of Portland in a 1 p.m. WCC match.
