SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 8-3 non-conference decision to No. 23 Coastal Carolina University Tuesday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium. With the loss, the Toreros fall to 4-10 overall, while the Chanticleers improve to 12-5.
CCU got on the scoreboard first, as they scored three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. The Chants runs came on Scott Woodward RBI sacrifice fly to left field, a Jacob May RBI single to right field and a Tommy La Stella RBI single to left.
After CCU tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, the Toreros responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on two hits. Bryan Haar got things started as he reached on a fielding error by the CCU shortstop. Dillon Checkal then moved Haar to second on a sacrifice bunt to the first baseman. Kevin Muno drove in Haar with a RBI single to left field, and after Muno stole second, Tony Strazzara drove him in with a RBI single through the left side to cut the lead down to three at 5-2.
CCU then added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning before USD would cap the scoring for the day in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Kris Bryant RBI single to left field,which scored Checkal, who had singled to lead off the inning, to put the game at its final of 8-3.
Seven different Toreros recorded one hit to tally all USD hits on the afternoon.
Dylan Covey (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Matt Rein (2-1) picked up the win for the Chanticleers, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Chanticleers will conclude the two-game set on Wednesday at 2 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
