SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros split Saturday afternoon's double header against New Orleans defeating the Privateers 9-4 in game one and losing 2-0 in game two. The Toreros move to 6-18 on the season while New Orleans moves to 2-25 overall.
In the opener on the day, the Toreros jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning and picked up four more runs in the second inning. With one runner on and one out, Dillon Checkal hit an RBI-double to left center field, for his second hit of the game scoring Tony Strazzara from second base. Kevin Muno matched Checkal's with an RBI-double to left centerfield scoring Checkal. Muno was caught stealing on Kris Bryant's at-bat. Bryant singled and stole second base and then scored on a Zack Kometani RBI-single through the left side. Kometani would score on a Corey LeVier RBI-single to scoring Kometani as the Toreros jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Privateers would score three runs cutting the Torero lead 6-3. The Toreros responded with a run extending their lead 7-3 in the bottom half of the inning as the Privateers shot back with a run in the sixth inning to make it 7-4. San Diego would push across two runs in the eighth inning as they went on to win 9-4.
Paul Sewald picks up the win improving to 1-1 on the season striking out two batters in 6.0 innings of work. James Pazos picked up the save with one strikeout in three innings of work. Brian Haar hit 3-for-4 on the day with three doubles and one run scored. Zack Kometani hit 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBI.
In game two, the Toreros battled back to climb out of a 2-0 deficit to the Privateers in the bottom of the ninth inning. New Orleans snapped a 22-game losing streak with the win as they improve to 2-26 on the season. UNO scored a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Toreros followed by another run in the fourth inning pulling away 2-0 against the Toreros. USD left eight runners on base through eight innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Toreros put a rally together with two runs in scoring position. With one out, Bryant put a single in play as Scott Schauer put a single up the middle moving Bryant to second base. New Orleans called time to talk over the situation which USD took advantage of as well. Head Coach Rich Hill and Assistant Coach Jay Johnson called over their players to map out a play of their own. USD came out of the huddle pulling off a double steal moving both runners into scoring position with the winning run at the plate. Tony Strazzara popped out to second base as both runners held. Duran walked on a 3-2 count loading the bases with two outs. Coach Hill brought in freshman Danny Hawksley to pinch-hit for lead-off batter Dillon Checkal. Hawksley struck out as the Privateers went on to win 2-0.
Chris Jensen pitched seven innings striking out eight batters, picking up the loss and falling to 0-4 on the season. Paul Paez pitched two innings in relief striking out two batters.
The Toreros return to Cunningham Stadium on Sunday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. to wrap up the final game against New Orleans.
