SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped the West Coast Conference series opener to the University of Portland, 14-2, Thursday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 10-25 overall and 2-5 in the WCC. With the win, the Pilots improve to 13-21 overall and 3-4 in the WCC.
The Pilots wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across three runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. The UP runs came on a Turner Gill two-run double and a Chet Thompson RBI single to give the Pilots the early 3-0 advantage.
The Pilots then went on to score one run in the second, fourth and eighth innings, and they scored three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to give them a 14-0 lead.
The Toreros the spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the eight inning, as they scored two runs on three hits. Tony Strazzara got things started with a walk, and he moved to second on Dillon Checkal's single through the left side. After Scott Schauer loaded the bases with a single, Zack Kometani drove in both Strazzara and Checkal with a two-run double to left centerfield to put the game at its final of 14-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Kometani led the way as he went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Corey LeVier also had a good day at the plate as he went 2-for-4.
Chris Jensen (1-6) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed eight runs,one unearned, on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work. Portland's Owen Jones (3-4) picked up the win for the Pilots as he allowed no runs on four hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they continue the three-game WCC series with the Pilots at 3 p.m.
