SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team (5-4-0) dropped a 1-0 decision to Long Beach State University Friday evening in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
The 49ers (5-3-1) scored the lone goal of the match in the 13th minute of action, as Taylor Nelson passed the ball to Shawna Gordon, who in turn sent it inside the box to Nadia Link, who punched it in from 10 yards out to give LBSU its first win over USD in program history.
San Diego had a good scoring opportunity not go its way, as in the 54th minute of action, Elissa Magracia took a corner kick for the Toreros, and she skied the ball into a crowded goal box, where Mariah Butera was able to get on the other end of it. However, Butera's shot was blocked by the LBSU defense to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Courtney Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves. Her counterpart, Kaitlyn Gustaves, picked up the win in goal as she allowed no goals and recorded two saves.
USD outshot the 49ers 11-8 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday as they host Cal State Fullerton in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
