SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's swimming team kicked off the 2011-2012 season with its first meet of the year Friday afternoon with a pentathlon against San Diego State from the USD pool. Despite strong performances from some of the Torero newcomers, San Diego State came out on top with a 56-37 victory.

Freshman Keenan Lineback was the Toreros' top finisher in the day's events, coming in fourth overall with a cumulative time of 6:19.91 in her five events. Lineback notched the best finish for USD with her second-place time of 2:10.16 in the 200 yard IM. Senior Sarah Geerdes posted a third-place finish in the 100 yard free, coming in at 53.29, six-tenths of a second behind first-place finisher Mikaela Macklin of SDSU.

In addition to Lineback, the Toreros' top six finishers included junior Melissa Andruzzi (6:20.52 overall), freshman Taylor Noonan (6:24.62), Geerdes (6:27.50), junior Jacquie Kimmel (6:29.31) and freshman Kaelie Reviglio (6:32.80).

"I think it was a good chance to have a baseline about where we are right now very early in the season," said Torero head coach Mike Keeler following the meet. "It was a good chance to swim five events in an hour, which is very unusual for swimmers and they did a good job. When we go back to look at results from last year at this time, I think we're in a good starting position. Our freshmen did a great job and we're very happy about that. They all did a great job for their first meet."

Macklin was the overall top finisher of the day with combined times of 6:05.70. Macklin took the top spot in the 100 yard fly (57.22), 100 yard free (53.23) and the 200 yard IM (2:08.51). Leona Jennings finished second overall at 6:14.04, including a first-place finish in the 100 yard back with a time of 58.15. Loreen Whitfield (6:18.29), Jessica Crider (6:25.10), Berklie Oscarson (6:25.61), and Stephanie Koch (6:28.19) rounded out the Aztecs' top six finishers.

The Toreros return to action next week with their annual intrasquad meet on Thursday, Sept. 29th at 11:30 am from the USD pool.
