LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Another balanced offensive output from the University of San Diego women's basketball team helped propel them to a 78-54 victory over Loyola Marymount University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Gersten Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 19-6 overall, move to 10-3 in the WCC and have now won three consecutive games. Also combined with a BYU loss this evening, USD is pulled to just .5 games back of the Cougars for second place in the WCC and they have locked up a one-round bye in the WCC Tournament. With the loss, the Lions fall to 7-19 overall and 3-11 in the WCC.
Amy Kame led the USD offense with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, while recording six assists. Izzy Chilcott was the second of three Toreros in double figures as she had 12 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out four assists. Dominique Conners was the final USD player in double figures, as she had 10 to run her consecutive double-digits streak to 16 games. All but two players who stepped on the floor tonight, scored at least two points. As a team, USD shot .548 from the field and out rebounded the Lions 31-27.
In the first half the Toreros came out firing on all cylinders, as a Felicia Wijenberg lay-up jumpstarted an 8-2 USD run over the first three minutes of the game. LMU however, made a small comeback as a Hazel Ramirez free throw sparked a 7-2 Lions run to pull Loyola Marymount back to within one at 10-9 with 13:37 to go.
The two teams then began to trade baskets over the next few minutes, and with the Toreros leading 22-16, a Wijenberg lay-up sparked a 19-6 USD run to close out the half and give USD a 41-22 lead at the break.
In the second half, USD quickly pushed the lead to 24 as they opened the frame on a 7-2 run over the first three minutes to take a 48-24 lead. USD never looked back as they continued to dominate and never let their lead dip below 20 more than one time. The Toreros would eventually build up their lead to as many as 29 at 66-37 on a Sophie Ederaine lay-up with 7:36 to go. USD then held on to claim the 24-point win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Provo, Utah to take on WCC newcomer BYU in a 12 p.m. game.
