San Diego Upends No. 21 Oregon State, 13-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For a third consecutive game, the Torero offense explodes in late innings to propel the University of San Diego baseball team (4-2) to a 13-2 upset win over No. 21 Oregon State University Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.

The Toreros recorded 16 hits as a team, marking the third consecutive game the Toreros have recorded double-digit hits. Kris Bryant paced the San Diego offense, as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a double. Dillon Haupt also had a productive day at the plate, as he went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, while Andrew Daniel and Austin Bailey each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they scored three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. Dillon Checkal got things started with a lead-off single and moved to second on AJ Robinson's infield single. Bryant then drove in Checkal with a double to left field, and two batters later, Bryan Haar pushed across the next two runs on a two-run single to left field to give USD a 3-0 lead.

The Beavers then managed to cut the lead down to one run in the top of the second inning, as they scored their only runs of the game on a Ryan Barnes two-run single to move the score to 3-2.

San Diego then responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, as they scored three runs on two hits. Bailey got things started when he reached on an error and managed to reach second on the same error. Bailey then moved to third on Dillon Checkal's ground out to the pitcher. Julian Duran then drew a walk, and Bryant would drive in the first two runs on a single to right center, and Bryant would then move to second on an error by the catcher, while Duran moved to third. The final run came on a wild pitch to give USD a 6-2 lead.

USD would then go on to score one run in the fifth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth innings to round off the scoring for the day.

Dylan Covey (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. Dan Child was saddled with the loss for the Beavers as he allowed five runs, four earned on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.

San Diego will return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. as they host the University of the Pacific in the final game of the USD Tournament.
