March 13, 2012

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior first baseman Bryan Haar's three-run home run in the seventh inning helped the University of San Diego baseball team pull away from Indiana in a 9-3 non-conference win Tuesday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.

San Diego (14-4) got wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Daniel got things started with a double to center field. Corey LeVier then double down the left field line, which scored Daniel. Kris Bryant then kept things going as he doubled down the left field line to score LeVier and give USD a 2-0 lead.

After the Hoosiers (4-11) took back a run in the top of the second inning, USD would once again find themselves up two runs, as they scored one run on a Dillon Haupt solo home run to left center, to give USD a 3-1 edge in the fourth inning.

Indiana then fought their way back and cut the lead back down to one in the top of the sixth, as they scored one run on a Sam Travis RBI single, which scored Dustin DeMuth, who was hit by a pitch, to move the score to 3-2.

USD then answer right back, as they scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth on a AJ Robinson two-run single to gvie USD a 6-2 lead.

The Hoosiers took back a run in the top of the seventh to make things interesting. The Indiana run came on a Chad Clark RBI ground-out to the third baseman, moving the score to 6-3.

San Diego then looked to get some breathing room, and they got just that in the bottom of the seventh inning. Louie Lechich got the ball rolling as he drew a walk. Two batters later, Bryant drew a walk with two outs. Haar then stepped to the plate and he unleashed a three-run homer over the left centerfield fence to put the game at its final of 9-3.

Offensively for the Toreros, LeVier led the way, as he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one double and one RBI, while Haar went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

Max Homick (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Drew Jacobs picked up his first collegiate save, as he allowed one run on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Indiana's Chad Martin (0-3) was saddled with the loss for the Hoosiers, as he allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.

The Toreros and Hoosiers will return to action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
