BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team split a doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon, getting edged in game one, 4-3, before coming back to post a 5-0 shutout in game two.
The Toreros (16-12, 3-1 PCSC) hit three home runs in a five-run fourth inning in game two and used Cassidy Coleman's complete game, three-hit shutout to earn the win, capping off a 3-1 opening weekend of Pacific Coast Conference play. Second baseman Jessica Tieszen went 3-for-4 in game two as well, while right fielder Lauren Tomey continued her hot hitting by driving in three runs on the day.
Game one started with both teams trading zeros until the top of the fourth when CSUB, the designated visitors in both games, put up two runs. Myshayla Fryer and Tera Macias each drove in runs for the Roadrunners (8-26, 1-3 PCSC) in the inning.
USD answered in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Hensley and Caitlin Rooney hit back-to-back RBI doubles to even the score at 2-2.
Both teams matched each other in the fifth inning as well, each scoring a run in their respective halves. CSUB got an RBI infield single from Fryer, while the Toreros picked up a run with Tomey's run-scoring base hit to center that brought the score to 3-3.
CSUB pushed across what would become the game-winning run in the top of the seventh as Laura King scored on a throwing error by Hensley.
Despite throwing 7.0 innings and allowing only one earned run (four runs total) on seven hits, Jenny Lahitte (7-6) took the loss, while Sarah Hoag (4-15) picked up the win for CSUB with 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings.
Like game one, the second contest started out with both teams scoreless through the first three innings. USD had chances in those first three innings but left five runners on, including a bases loaded, one-out opportunity in the bottom of the second.
The Toreros erupted in the bottom of the fourth, however, scoring all five of their runs in that half inning. Rooney led off the inning with a solo home run to center off Hoag, her fourth of the year. Two batters later Morgan Kurtz connected for her first-career long ball, a two-run shot to center field that put USD up 3-0. Tomey then blasted her fourth home run of the year when she cleared the left field fence for a two-run blast that scored Chloe Kaneko and gave the Toreros the 5-0 lead they would eventually hold on to.
Coleman (7-4) was in cruise control with her complete game gem where she allowed only three hits while striking out nine. Only five CSUB runners reached base the entire game and just two advanced past first base.
Hoag was saddled with the loss after going 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
The Toreros travel to Moraga, Calif. for a four-game PCSC road trip against Saint Mary's that begins with a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 6 at 12:00 pm.
