MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team wrapped up their four-game Pacific Coast Softball Conference series at Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon by splitting the two games at Cottrell Field. Sophomore RHP Jenny Lahitte tossed a no-hitter in USD's 1-0 game one victory, while the Gaels bounced back in game two to post an 11-1 defeat of the Toreros.
On a quiet day offensively for the Toreros, catcher Taylor Hensley went 3-for-3 in game two and hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season. USD only registered two hits in game one but it was enough for the win as Lahitte (9-6) went the distance while striking out eight in the no-hit effort. While records are incomplete, it is believed that Lahitte's no-hitter is the first in program history. Only three hitters reached base for Saint Mary's; a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and an error.
USD (19-13, 6-2 PCSC) didn't record their first hit until the bottom of the fourth when Hensley tallied an infield single. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth when the Toreros would finally get on the board after Morgan Kurtz led off the inning with a triple to center field. The next batter, Dana Prelsnik, drove Kurtz in with a groundout to the shortstop that wound up being the only run of the game for either team.
Saint Mary's starter, J. Lemmon (8-8), turned in a strong game of her own as she went 7.0 innings allowing just one run on two hits while striking out two.
The Gaels (15-19, 4-3 PCSC) turned around in game two and erupted for 11 runs on 15 hits as a team. Saint Mary's got on the board with a run in the top of the second that was matched by USD in the bottom half of the inning when Hensley ripped a solo home run off B. Linton to tie the game at 1-1.
Saint Mary's erupted in the top of the third, scoring six runs on seven hits in the inning and taking advantage of one USD throwing error to get out to a 7-1 lead. The Gaels added a run in the top of the fifth with the help of another Torero error.
With the USD offense still struggling to gather any momentum, SMC went on to add their final three runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI single and a two-run double off Torero reliever Cassidy Coleman.
RHP Kaitlin Healy (2-3) took the loss for USD after going 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with one strikeout. Linton (6-7) earned the win for SMC with the complete game where she allowed one run on seven hits while striking out one.
The Toreros return to action on Apr. 14 when they host Santa Clara for a 12/2pm doubleheader at the USD Softball Complex.
